Celebrating Earth Day with the Family!

Published: April 21 2020
Category: Holidays

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2020 marks the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day! The very first Earth Day took place on April 22nd, 1970 as a response to the oil spills, air pollution and water pollution found throughout the United States. It was recognized as “the planet’s largest civic event” and has led to the development of laws to help improve our planet’s climate.

According to Earthday.org, this year’s theme is, “Climate Action,” which is a very appropriate theme as we have already seen so many effects of climate change before and during our world-wide shut down caused by the COVID-19 outbreak. Although it’s been an incredibly stressful time for us all, we’re all in this together and we will get through this!

So, while we are all safe at home, let’s share some cheer with fun activities for the whole family!

More ways we can do our part:

  • Fix it! Don’t trash it! – It’s so easy to throw something away if it’s broken, but let’s try to save it instead. Do you have a hole in a piece of clothing? Add a cute patch to cover it up.
  • Get a green thumb – Plant a tree in your backyard, grow your favorite flowers or start your very own veggie garden.
  • Change your bulbs – Save electricity, and lower your light bill, by replacing your most used lights with energy efficient light bulbs.
  • Unplug your electronics – Make sure your electronics are completely unplugged when you’re done using them or you can plug them into a single power strip.
  • Lessen the car rides – During the world-wide shut down, we’ve seen a massive decrease of cars on the road. This has been a huge help in minimizing the amount of air pollution, especially in heavily populated areas. However, you can still minimize your car usage even more! When running errands, see if you can run multiple (if not all) your errands in a single trip. If you need to take a quick trip nearby, see if you can walk or bike to where you need to go. Not only is this a better choice for the environment, but it’s also a great way to get some exercise!

My family and I have just returned from an 11 night holiday at LBV. The resort is fantastic and the location could not be better.
